Termites – When to Call in Pest Control

Termites are an essential part of nature, breaking down dead wood and contributing to the ecosystem. But when they move from the garden into your home, they can become a serious and costly problem. So, how do you know when termites are just part of your yard’s natural balance and when they are a threat to your property?

What’s ‘Normal’?

Not all termite activity is cause for alarm. Some common, harmless signs of termites include:

  • Termite nests in trees – Many termite species build large, visible nests on tree trunks. While these may look intimidating, they usually don’t pose a direct threat to your home.
  • Termites in old, rotting logs – Finding termites in decaying wood or mulch is normal, as they are breaking down organic matter.
  • Flying termites after rain – Swarming termites (alates) are common after rain and are part of their reproductive cycle. Seeing a few around lights doesn’t necessarily mean an infestation.

When Should You Be Concerned?

  • Mud Tubes on Walls or Foundations – Subterranean termites travel in mud tunnels. If you spot these along your walls, skirting boards, or foundation, it’s a red flag.
  • Hollow or Damaged Wood – If wooden structures sound hollow when tapped or break away easily, termites may be feeding on them from the inside.
  • Sagging Floors or Warped Doors – Unexplained structural changes can indicate hidden termite damage.
  • Swarmers Inside Your Home – If you see flying termites inside, especially near windows or lights, it could mean an infestation is nearby.
  • Frass (Termite Droppings) – Drywood termites leave behind small, pellet-like droppings, a telltale sign of their presence.
